Associations sound alarm on helium reserve The Federal Helium Reserve is set to shut down Oct. 8, a move that at least two associations warn could lead to problems for a host of industries. According to the Wall Street Journal, the reserve currently supplies one-third of the world's crude helium. Government officials are pushing for the private sector to take over the business, but so far Congress has failed to pass legislation allowing for that transition to take place gradually, meaning the reserve's closure is coming sooner than many industries would like.
